Customs Delays Stall Irish Trade After Tariffs, Say Businesses

by Elena

Customs officers, particularly at key ports such as Dublin and Rosslare, are overwhelmed by the volume of work following the introduction of new tariffs in the latest Budget. The increased workload has led to significant delays in processing goods, leaving traders frustrated and business operations severely impacted. Delays of up to a week have become common, with even longer hold-ups reported outside the capital. In some cases, goods arrive too late to be sold in their intended season.

In the Dáil this afternoon, Mr. George Wolfe questioned the Minister for Finance about a shipment sent from Manchester on May 1st to Messrs A.M. O’Farrell & Son in Naas, which had still not been delivered. He asked whether the goods were being held by Customs at North Wall. Mr. Kevin O’Higgins, speaking on behalf of Mr. Ernest Blythe, replied that investigations were underway and the findings would be shared with Deputy Wolfe.

Mr. Wolfe emphasized the seriousness of the delay, noting that the shipment contained summer goods. He warned that the summer might be over before the goods reached the firm. He added that another consignment from London, dated May 26th, had also not yet arrived.

Customs delays are especially lengthy when goods contain dutiable components, as these often require additional checks, including laboratory testing.

Our Dublin correspondent reports that Sir Charles Barrington, Bart, who recently moved to England, has offered Glenstal Castle in Murroe to President W.T. Cosgrave as an official residence. The proposal included the possibility of the castle becoming the official home for future Presidents of the Free State.

President Cosgrave is expected to visit the estate, which lies ten miles from Limerick at the base of the Slieve Felim hills. The location is praised for its scenic beauty.

However, after careful consideration, the government has declined the offer. The decision was based on the castle’s distance from Dublin and the high costs associated with its upkeep.
