In a remarkable display of growth, Bangladesh’s denim exports to the United States have witnessed a significant upswing. According to data from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the country earned $138.75 million from denim exports to the US during a specific period. This figure represents a substantial 56.33% increase compared to the $88.75 million earned in the corresponding period of 2024. Meanwhile, the US also saw growth in its imports of denim items from other countries such as Mexico, Pakistan, Vietnam, and China, with growth rates of 16.27%, 33.29%, 6.49%, and 6.99% respectively during the same period.
The success story doesn’t end with the US market. Bangladesh’s denim exports to the European Union have also been on an upward trajectory. In the same period, exports to the EU amounted to $285.52 million, marking a 32.43% growth from the $215.60 million earned in the equivalent months of 2024. Other notable players in the EU denim export market, including Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, and Cambodia, have also experienced growth, with Pakistan leading the pack among these competitors with a 48.11% growth rate. However, Bangladesh has firmly held its ground as the top denim supplier to both the US and the EU in 2024, raking in an impressive $675.65 million from the US and $1.28 billion from the EU.
Industry insiders are upbeat about the current state of the denim business. Yeasin Al Faisal, manager at Argon Denims Ltd, informed The Financial Express that the denim business is thriving. He also pointed out that his company, Argon Denims, hasn’t been affected by the new US tariff regime as they primarily ship their goods to the EU. Currently, Argon Denims is participating in the 18th edition of the Bangladesh Denim Expo, which commenced on Monday at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital, further highlighting the vibrancy and growth potential of Bangladesh’s denim industry.
